Jonathan Martindale: “Cohen and Nozick on freedom”

June 4, 2013 @ 19:00 - 20:30

Next meeting of the Hayek Discussion Group will take place on Tuesday, 4 June (7.00pm) in Christ Church, Lecture Room 1. (Facebook event)

Speaker:
Jonathan Martindale, secretary of the Hayek Society and PPE student (Christ Church).

Topic:
“Cohen and Nozick on Freedom”

Abstract:
GA Cohen has argued that the property rights defended by libertarians limit the freedom of non owners just as much as they protect the freedom of owners. For Cohen, property rights merely determine the distribution of freedom among members of a given society. In this discussion, I aim to discuss some of the more radical implications of Cohen’s viewpoint and examine several libertarian responses. In particular, I shall argue Robert Nozick’s much maligned ‘moralised’ definition of liberty may withstand some of the most common critiques levelled against it. The discussion aims to shed light on exactly what the ideas of freedom and a voluntary society ultimatly imply.
