Second meeting of the Hayek Discussion Group this term will take place on Tuesday, 20 November (7:30pm) in Lecture Room 2, Christ Church. (Facebook event.)
Speaker:
Alexander Young – DPhil student in Genomic Medicine and Statistics at the Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics.
Topic:
“Heritability and the social sciences”
Abstract:
Heritability measures how important genetic influences on a trait are compared to non-genetic influences. Heritability is therefore fundamental to any investigation in to the causes of variability of traits of social importance, such as physical and mental inequalities. What we know about the heritability of traits such as IQ, longevity and income will be discussed. This will allow for an analysis of the challenge heritability estimates present to proponents of a designed social order.
